History of the Black Bird $5000 Fishing Derby
It all began in 1998 up at Lost Creek Reservoir and has moved twice since then, finally finding its home up at the Beautiful Diamond Lake Resort.
Rain, snow, and sleet hasn’t prevented Derby goers from participating in southern Oregon’s largest fishing derby. With over 1100 entries—not including the kids who fish for free—it’s a sight to see. The usually tranquil lake is full of activity on and off the water.
The Black Bird has made sure to keep this a family event, with prizes for the kids, teen, and adults, with 30 cash prizes for the adults, totaling $5000.00, the top cash prize being $1000.00. There is usually something new going on every year and there are always special activities planned for the kids to keep things exciting; there is always something for everyone!
In 2010, The Black Bird started donating to a charitable organization, the first being the American Cancer Society, specifically for breast cancer. The pink shirts drew a few grumbles from the men, but it was for a good cause, and so it has become a tradition for us. Every year we choose a different organization and are able to keep all of our donations here in the Valley.
The Derby is always the first Saturday after Father’s Day in June, so don’t forget to put it on your calendar!
So whether competitiveness brings you out or you’re looking to just have a great day with your family, you are sure to have a good time and create some great memories!
