The Store was founded by Lee Hobbs in 1965, basically as an Army Surplus store. He was going to name it "Trade Mart" but had some retail friends up in Centralia, Washington who owned a store called "Yard Birds" in which they had 10 ft. Magpie cartoon-like figures around the store. This gave Lee the idea of "Black Bird" with a 29ft. Black Bird over- looking the parking lot, which Lee designed and built.





Constructed of re-bar, hog wire and fiberglass, along with a lot of imagination!







The Bird can be seen sporting a tank top and shorts for Medford's Pear Blossum Run, a St. Patrick's Day outfit and even a Santa hat & candy cane at Christmas.









It may be one of the most photographed landmarks of Medford and is probably in more scrapbooks than all the WalMart signs in the world.



Black Bird has focused on being "A Men's Toy Store" but women love it too! With Hunting, Fishing and Camping Gear being it's strong points. This is not to say women do not shop here too, because they do! In addition to the Largest Family owned Sporting Goods Department in Southern Oregon, we also have Clothing, Shoes, Automotive and Hardware Departments. Our Clothing department has been noted for having one of the best selections of Carrhart,Levi and Wranger products around. Plus, a seasonal Ski Shop and Rafting Shop. WE'VE GOT IT ALL!! Now one of our big features is our "Home Brewing" department and "Wine Making." Now that Southern Oregon is a leading competitor in the vineyard business.



Along with all Major Brands of products we have some of the best fishing and hunting stories being told by our customers every day. The Store is Locally Owned and Operated, it is a family ran store and also ran by a staff that has been with the store for over 25 years.
